Antique oval serving platter Villeroy & Boch Mettlach Valeria decor, 1894
The decor is the beautiful "Valeria" and this is the first serie from late 19th century. This decoration was later put back into production in the 1980s, but this plate is original and antique from the late 1800s and has a unique allure.
The blue color of the transferware decoration is actually a beautiful shade of blue/green/grey. The background is a creamy white color with thick and fine craquelure, darker spots and signs of use (knife cuts) that give it a really special charm. There is a chip at the edge.
This vintage platter also has a particularity. By tapping it, it sounds as if it is broken, but no cracks, breaks, or repairs can be seen. The plate had actually been broken and repaired during production and before decoration and glazing. A sign of this repair is detectable at the back, but UNDER the original glaze and the genuine antique craquelure.
In those days, a lot of value was placed on things and nothing was thrown away that could be repaired.
