Antique cross made of black painted carved wood, partially gilded.
From 18th century.
The gilding was obtained with real silver leaf over a gesso layer and yellow transparent varnish.
This method was often used in the past for religious objects, since it was cheaper than gold, but it required great skill.
The dark spots and lines you see are due to oxidation of the silver leaf.
Great vintage condition with minimal chips, consider that this cross is almost 300 years old.
The cross has no hook.
